Sergio Oliva Jr., son of Sergio Oliva three time back to back to back Mr. Olympia champion, was only 20 years old when he started training in 2004.
Oliva Jr. ran track and played water polo in high school. What may surprise some people is that his dad, Sergio Senior, was actually against Jr. bodybuilding when he initially started. Not only did he not want Jr. to compete but he didn’t even want him working out and lifting weights.
Sergio Oliva felt that Jr. should focus on other things instead. Jr. was headstrong that the sport of bodybuilding is what he wanted to do with his life, so he went against his father’s wishes and did it anyway. When Jr. first started lifting, he weighed roughly 140 pounds. Three months later, Jr. had put on nearly 30 pounds of muscle. The following year Jr. competed for the very first time. Falling even more in love with the sport. Jr. states, “When I set my mind to doing something, I’m going to find a way to do it, so there is no stopping me.”
